I've had several birders ask me what I've seen in Chiloquin recently,
and my answer has been: "Not much, because I haven't really been out."
I decided to rectify that situation today, and here's my new answer:

Date: December 26, 2011
Location: Chiloquin, Klamath County, Oregon

Low temperature: 26 F - High temperature: 35 F
Percentage of sky covered by clouds: 80%
Precipitation: none

I did an abbreviated version of my old walking route to see what was
up. A variety of waterfowl were taking advantage of the unfrozen water
on the Williamson. I added a new species to my town list (I'd never
seen a Green-winged Teal here before, really?) and also saw a nice
drake Mallard x Northern Pintail (second bird from the right here:
http://wesweb.homestead.com/files/mallnopi.jpg , too bad it was all
the way across the river and backlit). Large flocks of Red-winged
Blackbirds and Cedar Waxwings were surprising.

Gray-crowned Rosie-Finch - Diamond Lake Junction May 27

Hi Everyone:

Sorry for the delay in getting this out. Larry Arbanas actually found the bird to the rear of the Cafe at Diamond Lake Junction on May 27th. He has been filming in Northern Lake County and Sheldon NWR. Just returned last night. According to the KBBT bird list this bird is listed as rare at Crater Lake NP and Diamond Lake.

Pelicans just seen at Miller Island Refuge

Amercian white pelicans - Saw them during early lunch outing, circling high in the sky near the ODFW office; did not see where they went from there as I was distracted watching the many thousands of snow geese in the field near the office. - Greg Holm (Crater Lake and Klamath Falls)

Thursday - Township Road b/t Milepost 6 and 7

Hi All - I finally took a day off and went birding with Charlotte Kisling. WOW!!!! We had a great morning on Tule Lake NWR, and then had lunch in Merrill at Pappy Ganders. We met two folks from Stockton, CA who wanted to see the Bald Eagles. Susan and Tracy decided to follow Charlotte and I to see if she could steer us on to the abundant Bald Eagles known in the Klamath Basin for this time of year.

She did! We were watching three Golden Eagles fight and play in the air and then I looked across the road and noticed that there were several birds on a big pivot. The binoculars confirmed the entire pivot all the way across had Bald Eagles on it. Then I looked in the field and there eagles everywhere. I mean everywhere. There was some water there and it looked like the eagles were sunning themselves and spreading out their wings and just have a lazy afternoon. There was over 100 eagles along with a few ravens. I was floored - I did not have the Nikon and only had the little Cannon and my photos do not do it justice. I hope you get a chance to see this sight.

Also, I learned to digi-scope see the Great Horned Owl - this was cool. Just put the camera on the scope.

various parts of the state. For now, these trips are free and

limited to field trip leader availability. You need not be an OFO
